3 Steps to Easy Organic Gardening
April is #NationalGardenMonth, and it’s not too late to kick off the growing season.
Here at Easy Organic, we make growing organic easy with a 3-step process to get started
- Test
- Feed
- Grow
Step 1: Test your Soil
Whether you are starting a new garden, planting flowers, or maintaining your lawn—a soil test is a great way to start off right.
A soil test gives you confidence that your hard work in your garden or yard will not be wasted. Even if you think you have the “black thumb” based on your previous growing efforts, the root cause could have been soil that was not ready for the plants you were trying to grow.
A soil test gives you detailed information on the nutrients in your soil, but the test itself does not identify:
- which additional nutrients your soil needs, based on the plants you would like to grow
- the right organic natural fertilizers and soil conditioners that can add the needed soil nutrients
- how much of each fertilizer or soil conditioner should be applied, and when to apply them
Fortunately, when you order a soil test from Easy Organic, in addition to the soil analysis from a professional lab, our experts personally review the results of each soil test, the plants you are planning to grow, the size of your garden, and the climate in your area. Based on all these factors, our experts provide specific fertilizer recommendations to give you a big head start on the way to step 2.
Here's a great video from the University of Maryland Home and Garden Information Center on how to collect your soil sample. The lab that processes our samples is one that they recommend!
Step 2: Feed your soil with organic fertilizer
The good news is that adding the nutrients your soil needs can be organic! Today, almost all garden and lawn soil needs can be addressed with an effective organic product.
Unfortunately, navigating the world of organic and natural fertilizer can be intimidating at first. Organic fertilizer options include everything from Alfalfa Meal and Kelp Meal to concentrated Liquid Kelp and Fish Emulsion Blends. Each product adds its own unique set of nutrients, so choosing the right combination of products in the right proportion for your soil and plants can be made easy with a healthy dose of expertise.
Easy Organic has partnered with Fertrell, one of the oldest organic fertilizer suppliers in the country to provide ready-mixed blends that have been formulated and refined over decades to address many of the most common fertilizer needs.
In addition, as part of your soil test, Easy Organic experts will recommend combinations of fertilizer blends to provide the right balance of nutrients for your soil and plants.
After feeding your soil with the right organic fertilizer, you are ready to move on to step 3.
Step 3: Grow your garden
Now that your soil is ready, you are ready to plant and grow!
Here’s a good resource for planting times for vegetables, based on the climate in your area, and whether you are growing from seed, or transplanting seedlings: Planting Calendar
Don’t worry if you are not planting at the ideal time. The planting times are set to take advantage of the longest growing season possible. If you plant later, there may still be a good chance of your plants having a productive yield, just not for as long a period of time.
Congratulations! Now you are ready to grow organic with ease and confidence!
As your first step, order your soil test today, and receive customized recommendations from Easy Organic on the right blend of fertilizers to give your garden soil the nutrients it needs to grow the healthiest plants.
