Aragonite Calcium for Animal Nutrition and Soil Improvement
Aragonite is a sea calcium sourced from the Bahamas that is exceptionally high in calcium and low in magnesium. Harvested from naturally pulverized mollusk shells, dry aragonite is a fine ground shell flour.
Animal Nutrition Feed Supplement
Dry Aragonite is a superior form of calcium that will benefit both livestock and poultry. Aragonite promotes strong bones, enhances milk and egg production, with the added benefit of efficient weight gain, feed utilization and muscle tone. For chickens, aragonite calcium for layers may also reduce cracked eggs.
Similar to lime, aragonite is a calcium carbonate, but while limestone is rock, aragonite is predigested seashells. Because aragonite is an animal product, its calcium is more available to your livestock.
Soil Amendment and Fertilizer
Many soils have had dolomite lime added for years and the magnesium may be tying up other nutrients in the soil. Aragonite should be used to offset a high magnesium content soil.
Because aragonite is a sea calcium, it has more surface area than traditional limes, which are pulverized rock and take longer to breakdown. Aragonite is basically sea shells that have been broken down over time by the ocean, their structure is more layered than that of stone. This additional surface area and layering helps make aragonite very available. Additionally, aragonite’s origin is drastically different than that of any limestone. Sea shells are the exoskeletons of living sea creatures that are secreted naturally by that animal. This makes not only their molecular structure different but provides a much wider range of trace nutrients within the aragonite, which is ultimately helpful to your soil. Because the calcium comes from living creatures it is very bio available to your planting and immediately begins working to neutralize, condition, and balance your soil.
Aragonite is very plant-available and can be applied throughout the year, whenever calcium is needed.
February to March is often a good time to apply Aragonite for your lawn or field at a rate of 10 lbs per 1,000 square feet to give the soil a shot of calcium and help the turf get the most out of the nutrients already present in the soil and rain.
For potted plants: One tablespoon per inch diameter of pot or plants
For strawberries and brambles (raspberries, blackberries, etc) apply 8 lbs per 100 row foot in early spring
For a customized analysis of the nutrients and fertilizer needs for your soil, test your soil and grow with confidence.
